A great gem in the hills of Burnley
Go past Burnley FC and head into the hills and you have some breathtaking views as you climb into Yorkshire. Turn off this road and you find yourself in the village of Hurstwood with its gorgeous reservoir walk.
A very bumpy (and in-need-of-maintenance) road takes you to the car park for Hurstwood Reservoir. Supposedly a pay and display, the machine was broken and seemingly had been for a while.
A walk from the car park up to the reservoir is via a wooded trail. Walkers, cyclists, horse riders and dogs all traverse this path.
Emerge from the woods and you find yourself at a gated crossroads. Either gate will eventually bring you around the resevoir back to where you started.
Hurstwood Reservoir is beautiful. A wooded section on one side and rolling dunes on the other, this really is a place to bring the camera!
Bins are few and far between with there only being one at the car park. Be prepared for a long walk with a poo bag!
Access to the reservoir has (rightly) been fenced off, with no access to it. At either end of the reservoir is a little bridge to cross which could bring a great pooch photograph opportunity.
In wet weather, we'd highly recommend sensible footwear as it can get very muddy, especially in the woodland section of the path.
There are plenty of other walking, bridal and cycling trails that lead away from the reservoir so you can expand on the basic circular route if you like. Also be aware that the rolling dunes are farmland, so you can expect to see animals grazing. If your dog is a chaser, better keep them on the lead. The wooded section on one side of the reservoir is gated and seemingly free of farm animals.
