Explore the world of a Netflix hit

Overview

For those who watched the Netflix drama The Stranger, you may have watched episode 4 wondering where that viaduct was that played such a significant role. Well, you can visit this place in real life! Based just outside of the Ribble Valley in a little town called Great Harwood, Martholme viaduct is a reclaimed train line that used to connect the town to Simonstone and Padiham but was closed in 1964. Unfortunately, you can only access this from one side, the Great Harwood side, as the Read side is private land. However, the views are definitely worth it!

To get to the viaduct, you need to walk down Martholme Lane, off Whalley Road. There are no real car parks nearby (except for those owned by the two local restaurants) and the closest on-street parking is on Harwood New Road. This gives you a little walk down the busy Whalley Road but there is a pavement. Going down Martholme Lane, you can turn off half way down and go through a little path and woodland and end up on the old train line, which takes you to the viaduct, or you can go all the way down the lane and climb some steps to the top. Alternatively, you can turn down Mill Lane and find yourself on the old train line further up from the little woodland area.
